What is Botox?®

Botox® is one of the many trade names for the neurotoxic protein called botulinum toxin that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

Is Botox® harmful?

In large doses, the protein causes botulism, a rare paralytic illness often linked to food poisoning. However, the protein is used in cosmetic medicine to treat moderate to severe brow furrow (glabellar lines), wrinkles, and facial creases use a small amount of diluted botulinum toxin that enables controlled weakening of muscles.

What type of Botox® is used to control fine lines and wrinkles?

There are seven types of Botulinum toxin, but our office uses Type A which is the most potent, longest lasting, and therefore gives the best result.

What are indications for Botox® usage?

Botox® is used for dynamic lines. Dynamic facial lines are wrinkles that appear when you make a facial expression, as to those wrinkles that are always present known as static lines (which static lines can be corrected with the use of a collagen or hyaluronic acid filler such as Juvaderm).

Is this approved by the FDA?

The only FDA cosmetic usage of Botox® is for the glabella (the small area of the forehead in between your eyes). However, it is very common to use this product “off label” for forehead wrinkles, crows feet, eyebrow lift, eye widening, and smiling techniques.

How much does Botox® cost?
